Random conversations with cab drivers

  • The morning news on radio sparked off a conversation. Not much of a morning person, expecially when it is at 6plus in the morning. The cab guy said "Cannot go swim at Pasir Ris one. I almost got drowned when my friends and I swam there when we were young. There is quick sand so you never know how deep the sea is. Really!" -Thanks for the vital information. Will bear that in mind. Not too sure how much of my mind was working at that point of the conversation, at that time of the day.
  • Heading home after a long day at work. Boarded the cab in front of the school. The cab guy said,"You are a teacher ar? You don't look like one. Children these days very hard to teach hor? But the young teachers these days are so different from the teachers during my time. The way they speak commands respect and you straight away know they are teachers but young teachers now speak so casually, just like anyone on the street." -Thanks uncle for that valuable lesson. Will bear that in mind when I speak in future. How about if I throw in a pair of thick glasses, a pair of Dr Scholl's sandals and a floral dress? Will that make me more of a teacher?
  • Another cab guy said, "Why you join teaching? Do you have a degree or is it that you join teaching because you cannot find other jobs?" -Thanks uncle. Yes, I do have a degree and no, I did not join teaching because there were no other jobs for me. But I do frequently ask myself if I am in the right profession because the red tapes are killing my joy.
